Alright, it’s time for a blog!
Things have been busy and slow. I had a really fabulous New Year’s Eve and Day with friends. It really felt like a new beginning, a fresh start … I want to be very positive and less lazy about some things in the new year! I want to make the most of my time in Korea and not be a boring poop who sits at home too much (but ah, sometime home just feels like heaven!). I would really like to be making some music, but there has been no extra money to buy a guitar so far. Maybe in February. I have unrealized musical ideas.

This week was my first camp and I was not as prepared as I’d liked to have been! Every single night from Sunday until (7am) this morning, it has been nothing but camp preparations. I AM SO SICK OF POWERPOINT! And youtube.
This morning: after less than 2 hours of sleep total (at odd hours) last night, I made it to school on time and leisurely, prepared to use the masterpiece of a powerpoint I had taken hours to create last night … but what to my blundering eyes should appear! NO PPT! So, with less than 10 minutes to class I asked my coteacher (who happened to be here today, thank goodness) to be there to meet the students (who are always late anyway!!) while I ran home to get the PPT with the majority of the lesson in it! No PPT would have = no class. Today is really cold, the kind of cold that hurts to breathe it in. Out of shape Kayla with a cold running in the painful air– on ice! It is funny, laugh with me. At the moment it was bitter pain and misery but now, funny! On the way back I slipped and fell. Blustered into class with fogged glasses and a bright red face! But the class went well and the PPT was appreciated … so all was well. I was only 5 minutes late to class—I was super fast despite the slip! Quite impressed at my speed, actually.
Then at lunch today, I spilled Cham-bong (sp? *spicy fish soup) all over my pants. So I smell like a spicy, spicy fish right now!
Tonight I plan to do a lot of sleeping and maybe a bit of crocheting and I’ll be all better. I need to cook up and freeze more pinto beans … last night I had a feast of onion/bean/mozzarella quesadilla and sautéed cabbage with Mexican spices! It was delicious. And to think I could have been eating that for months now … a bit sad I haven’t eaten it yet! Big thanks to Daddy for the beans, Tapatio sauce, and spices. At work I have been enjoying the eggnog-flavored tea from Momma – it is called “egg-nogg’n.” It is a tasty strong black tea, and more highly caffeinated than my usual work drinks so I’ve been egg-nogg’n around my classroom in the lonely afternoons all week!
Instead of using existing materials out there, I created my Winter camps from scratch—the theme: English for the Arts. Monday music, Tuesday poetry, Wednesday stories, Thursday Art (visual), Friday drama. Part of the time-intensiveness of it is that I like the subject matter too much : ). Poetry, art, and story days have been particularly good, I must say. I thought of Daddy a lot because making my introduction to music PPT I was conflicted over whether to define country music with some crap the kids might recognize—Taylor Swift, etc.—or to play something classic. I went with a Bob Wills and a Merle Haggard song, he would be proud! I just could not bring myself to define country music with its current pop incarnations. It’s too special to me and a part of my history – just couldn’t do it!
Disparate musical delights this week: old favorites Gorillaz, Matisyahu, “Have One on Me” new Joanna Newsom album (SO GOOD!), my Buffy Sainte-Marie station on Jango (free radio like Pandora). It plays Joni Mitchell, Woody Guthrie, Devendra Banhart, Simon and Garfunkle, Emmylou Harris and other lovely things to me at work!
a couple photos to come to break up all that monotonous text! sheesh.
LOVE,
Kay
